Eid-ul-Azha being celebrated with religious fervour?

Happy Eid-ul-Azha

The whole nation is rejoicing Eid-ul-Azha with religious passion in commemoration of Hazrat Ibrahim’s sacrifice of his beloved son Hazrat Ismail, later replaced by the sacrifice of the goat.

Eid-ul-Azha dawns with Eid prayer and supplications followed by the sacrifice of animals with families’ get togethers and meat feasts. But, the real spirit of Eid still remains vague among folks.

Today, this religious festivity has become a fashion and a status symbol, so to speak. I am not at all questioning the intentions of the Muslims, but when I see people vying for their sacrificial animals makes me feel that we Muslims have really elapsed the real soul of this religious event.

Does Eid-ul-Azha only mean that we need to buy animal(s)and sacrifice it for meat to fill our bellies and mesmerise our taste buds with scrumptious dishes and excite our nostrils with the very aroma of Bar B Q? Or is it only about showing off that our animal is bigger and healthier than our neighbours’? NO, this is not the real essence of Eid-ul-Azha.

We need to ask ourselves whether we remember the submissiveness of Hazrat Ibrahim to sacrifice his beloved son Hazrat Ismail, who Ibrahim begot in his old age. Was that sacrifice meant for raising status in the society, or was it for meat? No, that sacrifice was a test by ALLAH and both father and son passed it and proved their obedience before ALLAH. The sacrifice of Ismail was replaced with the sacrifice of goat and today we Muslims commemorate that sacrifice. We do sacrifice beautiful animals today, but we do not realise the real spirit of Eid-ul-Azha.

So, I request all the Muslims to understand what Eid-ul-Azha is meant for, without forgetting to feed poor and needy on this auspicious event.

May ALLAH accept our sacrifices and make us understand and relish the real spirit of Eid-ul-Azha. Aameen. Enjoy!
