The good and the bad of furniture imports from China to Pakistan

China is one of the fastest growing countries in the industrial world and since 200, the country has shown immense revolution and has introduced new ways of manufacturing products.

Chinese companies works on the cost-saving model to reach their tasks. They offer high-quality products at a price which is within the means of many discerning buyers and this is the key factor of their success. This strategy allows China to prove its mettle in the global markets and expand its business in many regions across the world.

FURNITURE IMPORTS FROM CHINA

Pakistan and China share the strongest bond in the field of business. Among many other commodities, Pakistan imports furniture from China. Different types of furniture items including home, office, kids or any other sorts are imported to Pakistan. The quality which furniture sellers in China provide in at an attractive cost, entices many furniture importers here. Considering the demand for Chinese furniture, many furniture retailers in Pakistan now prefer to import the furniture from China rather than manufacturing good in-house.

But this doesn’t mean that the demand for our locally made furniture is diminishing. Furniture products manufactured in the country represent 95% of the total market. The leading furniture making areas of Pakistan are Chiniot, Gujrat, Lahore, Peshawar and Karachi. But unfortunately, nowadays prospects are not rosy, as local manufacturers are facing a challenge partly due to continuously increasing furniture imports from China and because timber production has gone down because of rampant deforestation. The latter issue has, in point of fact, lead to an increase in the cost of raw material used manufacturing furniture, thus increasing price of furniture items.

Furniture manufacturers have also started importing raw material from China. According to an estimate, 60% of the total raw material required in our local furniture industry is imported from the China. Even the sale volume of our local furniture products has decreased by 30%. Hence, the demand for Chinese furniture is gradually increasing in Pakistan.

As mentioned before, China provides high-grade items at an attractive price. Although, it is commonly believed that Chinese products lag in quality, but this frame of mind is also changing with the passage of time, as China is paying a massive heed to quality and produces items that are reliable and long-lasting.

Pakistan used to import furniture made of wood, metal and plastic for use in hospitals, offices, malls and homes etc from different countries in the world, but because of the affordability factor, most of the furniture items are now imported from China.

The bottom line is that the Chinese furniture industry is seeing massive success in Pakistan. Lack of raw material is also a major factor contributing to the decline of local furniture industry. Pakistan exports a large quantity of wooden furniture every year, but furniture experts are unfortunately facing a great challenge because of many untoward circumstances.

    Hi,

The government takes taxes from furniture imports. How can it impose a ban of these imports? But you never know, this government can do anything unexpected.

Nice article. In one of the previous articles published by this website, i read that the Pakistan Furniture Council wants a ban on furniture imports, which i think is not good

Thanks Shiza for writing such a good article. I believe both aspects (in-house manufacturing of furniture and import from China) are important. If the government bans imports from China, many people including furniture retailers will suffer.
